Setting up your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods with Find My iPhone
Lets work with your main device, which may be an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
From your home screen, go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords > iCloud > Find My iPhone (or Find My iPod or Find My iPad), and ensure that the feature is toggled on. If it is the first time you’re setting it up, you may be required to input your Apple ID.
Where you don’t yet have an Apple ID, select “Create a new Apple ID” and follow the steps.
Also on this screen, switch on ‘Send Last Location’. This feature will ensure your device registers its location when it’s battery is about to drain. So, when you want to locate the device later, you’ll find out where it was.
Now, for those that have an Apple Watch paired with their iPhone or iPad. You can also get it set up within Find My iPhone. Now you can be confident when you lose or misplace your device.
If you’ve done this previously and you’re here to see how to track down your device, scroll further down for a full guide.
Setting up Find My Mac
It works pretty much differently on Mac. Here you’ll have to open up the Apple Menu by pressing the little logo on the top left of your PC screen. Then, scroll down to System Preferences and find the iCloud section.
You’ll find a long list of features that can be backed up to your iCloud, like Siri and your notes. Look closely and you’ll find a Find My Mac icon that you’ll need to toggle on and get set up.
Now you’re good to go, basking in the knowing that you’ll be able to track down your device if you lose/misplace it.
Tracking down your lost device on a PC or Mac
Assuming you’ve now lost your device or you’re worried it has been stolen, here’s how to track it down.
From a Mac or PC, Open your web browser and visit iCloud.com. Login with your Apple ID and password, then click on Find iPhone (the icon looks like a green radar). After inputting your password again, a map will display the location of all your iOS devices and Macs.
A green dot indicates that the product is online, while a gray dot shows it’s offline. If the device was online at any time within the previous 24 hours, the time it was last located will be shown.
If a device shows that its online, click on the dot, then click on the information icon (i). Now, select the device from the pull-down menu that ensues.
Here, a new window will pop up that shows when the device was last located and how much battery life remains. Also , there are three options: Play Sound (to help pinpoint the device if it’s close by), Lost Mode (this allows you lock and track the device, and also provide contact information), and lastly.. Erase device.
If you decide to remotely erase your device you’ll lose everything on it. But it’s advisable to have lots of private information backed up to iCloud.
If the device is offline, you’ll have a totally different option: Notify me when found. This option alerts you when the item is back online.
Tracking down your lost device using an iOS device
You can also locate a lost Apple device using another Apple device. Firstly, download the Find My iPhone app if you don’t have it installed.
You’ll then be able to track down the location of your device, or where it was last spotted.
That’s pretty much how you get it done.
